Pace Summary

Pace is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Santa Rosa County, Florida, United States. It is a suburb of Pensacola and is part of the Pensacola–Ferry Pass–Brent Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 20,039 at the 2010 census.

History

Pace was first settled in the early 1800s by settlers from Georgia and Alabama. The area was originally known as Pace’s Settlement, named after the Pace family who were among the first settlers. The Pace family owned a large tract of land in the area and operated a sawmill and gristmill.
In 1877, the Pace post office was established and the town was officially incorporated in 1925. The town was named after the Pace family and was originally known as Pace’s Settlement.
In the early 1900s, Pace was a small farming community. The town was home to several small businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a cotton gin.

Geography

Pace is located in the western part of Santa Rosa County at 30°35'17" North, 87°14'45" West (30.588133, -87.245890). It is bordered to the north by the city of Milton, to the east by the city of Gulf Breeze, and to the south by the city of Pensacola.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 28.3 square miles (73.3 km2), of which 28.2 square miles (73.1 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (0.35%) is water.

Economy

Pace is home to several large employers, including the Santa Rosa County School District, the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office, and the Santa Rosa County Health Department. The town is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 20,039 people, 7,717 households, and 5,717 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 710.3 people per square mile (274.2/km2). There were 8,541 housing units at an average density of 302.3 per square mile (116.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.3% of the population.
There were 7,717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $51,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $20,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
