Orange City Summary

Orange City is a city located in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 10,599 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Deltona–Daytona Beach–Ormond Beach metropolitan area, which was home to 590,289 people in 2010.

History

Orange City was founded in 1882 by a group of settlers from Michigan. The city was named after the orange groves that were planted in the area. The city was incorporated in 1925.

Geography

Orange City is located at 28°56′N 81°17′W (28.937, -81.283). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), of which 5.1 square miles (13.2 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.45%) is water.

Economy

Orange City's economy is largely based on tourism and agriculture. The city is home to several tourist attractions, including the Orange City Racing and Card Club, the Orange City Historical Museum, and the Orange City Arts and Culture Center. The city is also home to several agricultural businesses, including citrus groves, nurseries, and farms.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 10,599 people, 4,093 households, and 2,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,077.3 people per square mile (800.7/km2). There were 4,521 housing units at an average density of 886.2 per square mile (342.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 6.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.7% of the population.
There were 4,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39.7 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $50,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $27,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
