Myrtle Grove Summary

Myrtle Grove is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 8,945 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ferry Pass–Brent Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Myrtle Grove was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of settlers from Georgia. The area was originally known as “Myrtle Grove Plantation” and was owned by the prominent local family of the same name. The plantation was a large cotton and corn farm, and the family also owned a sawmill and a gristmill. The plantation was eventually sold to the U.S. government in the late 1800s and the land was used to create a military base. The base was eventually closed in the early 1900s and the land was sold to developers.
The area was then developed into a residential community and was incorporated as a town in the early 1950s. The town was named after the original plantation and was officially incorporated as the Town of Myrtle Grove in 1954. The town was later annexed by the City of Pensacola in 1965.

Geography

Myrtle Grove is located at 30°25'17" North, 87°14'45" West (30.4214, -87.2458). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.17%) is water.

Economy

Myrtle Grove is primarily a residential community, but there are a few businesses located in the area. The largest employer in the area is the Naval Air Station Pensacola, which is located just south of the CDP. Other businesses in the area include a few small retail stores, restaurants, and a few professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,945 people, 3,717 households, and 2,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,082.3 people per square mile (418.7/km2). There were 3,945 housing units at an average density of 479.2/sq mi (185.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.2% White, 14.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 3,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 24.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.86.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $48,958. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $20,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
