Madeira Beach Summary

Madeira Beach is a city located in Pinellas County, Florida, United States, on the Gulf of Mexico. It is part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. The population was 4,263 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Madeira Beach is located at 27°49′17″N 82°49′18″W (27.821445, -82.821717). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.4 square miles (6.2 km2), of which 1.9 square miles (4.9 km2) is land and 0.5 square miles (1.3 km2) (20.83%) is water.

History

Madeira Beach was originally inhabited by the Tocobaga Indians. The first European to visit the area was Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1539. The area was later settled by fishermen and farmers in the late 19th century. The city was incorporated in 1955.

Economy

Madeira Beach is a popular tourist destination, with many hotels, restaurants, and attractions. The city is also home to several marinas, including the John's Pass Marina, which is the largest marina in the area. The city is also home to several fishing charters, which offer deep sea fishing trips.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,263 people, 2,093 households, and 1,093 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,231.2 people per square mile (863.3/km2). There were 3,093 housing units at an average density of 1,619.2 per square mile (625.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.17% White, 0.40% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.86% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.90% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 14.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 47.2% were non-families. 38.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.02 and the average family size was 2.63.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 15.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 103.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,917. About 5.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
