Lower Grand Lagoon Summary

Grand Lagoon is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Bay County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Panama City–Lynn Haven–Panama City Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 5,902 at the 2010 census.

History

Grand Lagoon was first settled in the late 19th century by fishermen and farmers. The area was originally known as “Lagoon City” and was later renamed “Grand Lagoon” in the early 20th century. The name was derived from the large lagoon located in the area.
In the 1950s, the area began to experience rapid growth due to the development of the Panama City Beach area. The area was incorporated as a town in 1959 and was later annexed by Panama City Beach in 1999.

Geography

Grand Lagoon is located at 30°11'25" North, 85°48'17" West (30.1903, -85.8047). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 3.9 square miles (10.1 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.7 km2) (7.14%) is water.

Economy

Grand Lagoon is a popular tourist destination due to its proximity to Panama City Beach. The area is home to several restaurants, hotels, and other businesses catering to tourists. The area is also home to several marinas and boat ramps, making it a popular destination for boaters.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,902 people, 2,541 households, and 1,717 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,521.2 people per square mile (586.2/km2). There were 3,072 housing units at an average density of 790.2/sq mi (305.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.45% White, 0.45% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 22.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.79.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 19.7% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $22,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $20,917. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
