Lecanto Summary

Lecanto is a census-designated place (CDP) in Citrus County, Florida, United States. The population was 6,461 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Homosassa Springs Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Lecanto was originally known as “Lecanto Station”, a stop on the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. The name was derived from the Spanish word for “citrus”. The area was first settled in the late 19th century by settlers from the northern United States. The first post office was established in 1887.

Geography

Lecanto is located in central Citrus County at 28°54′N 82°30′W (28.9000, -82.5000). It is bordered to the north by the city of Crystal River, to the east by the city of Inverness, and to the south by the unincorporated community of Homosassa Springs.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 11.2sqkm, of which 11.1sqkm is land and 0.1sqkm, or 0.90%, is water.

Economy

The economy of Lecanto is largely based on tourism and agriculture. The area is home to several citrus groves, as well as a number of tourist attractions, such as the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park and the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,945 people, 2,521 households, and 1,717 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 545.3 people per square mile (210.9/km2). There were 2,845 housing units at an average density of 261.2/sqmi (100.8/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 94.90% White, 2.45% African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.77% from other races, and 1.31% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.17% of the population.
There were 2,521 households, out of which 22.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 26.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.79.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 20.2% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 22.7% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 26.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $30,917, and the median income for a family was $36,944. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,964 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
