Inverness Highlands South Summary

Inverness Highlands South is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Citrus County, Florida, United States. The population was 4,945 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Homosassa Springs Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Inverness Highlands South was first settled in the late 19th century by settlers from the north. The area was originally known as "Tompkinsville" after the first settler, William Tompkins. The area was later renamed "Inverness Highlands South" in the early 20th century.
The area was largely agricultural until the 1950s when the population began to grow rapidly. The area was incorporated as a city in 1959 and has since become a popular residential area.

Geography

Inverness Highlands South is located at 28°50'N 82°25'W (28.829, -82.417). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.3 square miles (11.2 km2), of which 4.2 square miles (10.9 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) (2.37%) is water.

Economy

Inverness Highlands South is a largely residential area, with most of its residents employed in the nearby cities of Inverness and Homosassa. The area is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,945 people, 2,072 households, and 1,521 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,179.2 people per square mile (455.7/km2). There were 2,310 housing units at an average density of 551.2/sq mi (212.9/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.45% White, 0.61% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.45% of the population.
There were 2,072 households, out of which 22.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.78.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 19.7% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 22.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 27.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 47 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $32,917, and the median income for a family was $37,917. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $17,917. About 8.2% of families and 10.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
