According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (2.17%) is water.

History

Inverness Highlands North was first settled in the late 19th century by settlers from the nearby town of Inverness. The area was originally known as "Inverness Highlands" and was part of the larger Inverness Township. In the early 20th century, the area was divided into two separate CDPs, Inverness Highlands North and Inverness Highlands South.

Economy

Inverness Highlands North is primarily a residential community, with most of its residents employed in the nearby cities of Inverness and Homosassa Springs. The area is also home to several small businesses, including a few restaurants, a gas station, and a few retail stores.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,845 people, 2,068 households, and 1,521 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,179.2 people per square mile (455.7/km2). There were 2,310 housing units at an average density of 563.2/sq mi (217.6/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.45% White, 0.45% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.45% of the population.
There were 2,068 households, out of which 22.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.73.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 19.2% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 22.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 28.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 47 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $31,944, and the median income for a family was $36,944. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 10.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
