Holden Heights Summary
Holden Heights is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Orange County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 8,845 at the 2010 census.
History
Holden Heights was originally part of the Holden family’s citrus groves. The family sold the land to developers in the 1950s, and the area was developed into a residential community. The area was incorporated as a town in 1959, but was later annexed by the City of Orlando in 1965.
Geography
Holden Heights is located at 28°30′N 81°20′W (28.50, -81.33). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Holden Heights is largely based on tourism and service industries. The area is home to several hotels, restaurants, and retail stores. The area also has a number of small businesses, including auto repair shops, beauty salons, and medical offices.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 8,845 people, 3,717 households, and 2,092 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 7,541.3 people per square mile (2,907.2/km2). There were 4,039 housing units at an average density of 3,400.3/sq mi (1,312.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 57.2% White, 33.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.7% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.2% of the population.
There were 3,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.2% were married couples living together, 20.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $25,945, and the median income for a family was $30,938. Males had a median income of $25,945 versus $20,938 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $13,945. About 17.2% of families and 20.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
