Highland City Summary

Highland City is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 8,945 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lakeland–Winter Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.3 square miles (11.2 km2), of which 4.2 square miles (10.9 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) (2.17%) is water.

History

Highland City was founded in the late 1800s by settlers from the North. The area was originally known as “Highland Park” and was a popular destination for tourists. The area was later renamed “Highland City” in the early 1900s.
Highland City was incorporated in 1925 and was the first city in Polk County to be incorporated. The city was originally a farming community and was known for its citrus groves.
In the 1950s, the city began to experience rapid growth due to the development of the nearby cities of Lakeland and Winter Haven. The city was annexed by the City of Lakeland in 1959.

Economy

Highland City is a primarily residential community with a few small businesses. The city is home to several large employers, including Publix Super Markets, Walmart, and the Polk County School Board.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,945 people, 3,541 households, and 2,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,093.3 people per square mile (808.2/km2). There were 3,817 housing units at an average density of 890.2/sq mi (344.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $37,945, and the median income for a family was $44,919. Males had a median income of $31,919 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $18,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
