Highland Beach Summary
Highland Beach is a town located in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. It is located on the Atlantic Ocean, between Boca Raton and Delray Beach. The population was 4,918 at the 2010 census.
History
Highland Beach was founded in 1921 by Carl G. Fisher, a real estate developer from Indiana. Fisher had purchased the land from the Hillsboro Land Company, which had acquired it from the Hillsboro Inlet Company. Fisher named the town after the high sand dunes that lined the beach.
In the early 1920s, Fisher began to develop the town, building a hotel, a casino, and a golf course. He also built a bridge connecting the town to the mainland. The bridge was destroyed by a hurricane in 1926, but was rebuilt in 1929.
In the 1930s, the town began to attract wealthy vacationers from the Midwest and Northeast. The town was incorporated in 1949, and the population grew steadily throughout the 1950s and 1960s.
Geography
Highland Beach is located at 26°24′N 80°3′W (26.40, -80.05). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), of which 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2) (25.00%) is water.
Economy
Highland Beach is a residential community, with no major industries or businesses. The town is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, shops, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 4,918 people, 2,521 households, and 1,541 families residing in the town. The population density was 5,541.2 people per square mile (2,139.7/km2). There were 3,072 housing units at an average density of 3,521.2 per square mile (1,355.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.45% White, 0.61% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.94% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.66% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.45% of the population.
There were 2,521 households, out of which 11.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 4.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.96 and the average family size was 2.37.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 10.2% under the age of 18, 2.3% from 18 to 24, 16.2% from 25 to 44, 33.2% from 45 to 64, and 38.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 62 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.7 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $68,958, and the median income for a family was $87,917. Males had a median income of $60,000 versus $41,250 for females. The per capita income for the town was $62,945. About 2.2% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including none of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
