Gulf Breeze Summary

Gulf Breeze is a city located in Santa Rosa County, Florida, United States, on the Fairpoint Peninsula, just across Pensacola Bay from Pensacola. It is the most populous city in the county, with a population of 6,716 as of the 2010 census. The city is part of the Pensacola–Ferry Pass–Brent Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.

History

Gulf Breeze was founded in 1925 by William H. Milton, Sr., who was the Governor of Florida from 1921 to 1925. Milton purchased the land from the Gulf Breeze Company, which had been formed in 1921 by a group of investors from Pensacola. The company had purchased the land from the U.S. government in order to develop a resort community. Milton named the city after the Gulf breeze that blew across the peninsula.
The city was incorporated in 1949 and has grown steadily since then. In the 1950s, the city was a popular tourist destination, with many visitors coming to enjoy the beaches and fishing. In the 1960s, the city began to develop more residential areas and businesses, and by the 1970s, it had become a popular retirement destination.

Geography

Gulf Breeze is located in the western part of Santa Rosa County, on the Fairpoint Peninsula, which is bordered by Pensacola Bay to the north and Santa Rosa Sound to the south. The city is approximately 15 miles east of Pensacola and 25 miles west of Milton.
The city has a total area of 8.2 square miles, of which 7.9 square miles is land and 0.3 square miles is water. The city is located at an elevation of 10 feet above sea level.

Economy

Gulf Breeze is a popular tourist destination, with many visitors coming to enjoy the beaches and fishing. The city is also home to a number of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to the Naval Live Oaks Reservation, which is a protected area of the Gulf Islands National Seashore.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 6,716 people, 2,845 households, and 1,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 854.3 people per square mile. There were 3,093 housing units at an average density of 389.7 per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 3.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.86.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 21.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $54,844. Males had a median income of $41,919 versus $30,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
