Debary Summary
DeBary is a city located in Volusia County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Deltona–Daytona Beach–Ormond Beach metropolitan area, which is the most populous metropolitan area in the state. The population of DeBary was 19,320 at the 2010 census.
History
DeBary was founded in 1871 by Samuel Frederick deBary, a German immigrant who had moved to Florida from New York. He purchased a large tract of land along the St. Johns River and built a large plantation. The plantation was destroyed by a hurricane in 1876, but deBary rebuilt it and continued to operate it until his death in 1891.
The area remained largely undeveloped until the 1950s, when the population began to grow rapidly. The city was incorporated in 1993 and has since grown to become one of the fastest-growing cities in the state.
Geography
DeBary is located in central Volusia County, at the intersection of Interstate 4 and U.S. Route 17-92. It is bordered to the north by Orange City, to the east by Deltona, to the south by Lake Monroe, and to the west by Sanford.
The city has a total area of 11.2 square miles, of which 10.9 square miles is land and 0.3 square miles is water. The St. Johns River forms the western boundary of the city.
Economy
DeBary is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to several industrial parks, which provide employment opportunities for local residents.
The city is served by the SunRail commuter rail system, which provides access to downtown Orlando and other nearby cities.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 19,320 people, 7,845 households, and 5,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,769.3 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 11.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.3% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.7% of the population.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. The per capita income for the city was $22,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
DeBary is served by the Volusia County School District, which operates several elementary, middle, and high schools in the city. The city is also home to Stetson University College of Law, which is located in downtown DeBary.
