Citrus Springs Summary
Citrus Springs is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Citrus County, Florida, United States. The population was 8,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Homosassa Springs Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Citrus Springs was founded in 1970 by the Mackle Brothers, a development company from Miami. The Mackles purchased 10,000 acres of land in Citrus County and began to develop the area. The Mackles named the area Citrus Springs because of the abundance of citrus trees in the area. The first homes were built in 1971 and the area quickly grew. By the 1980s, Citrus Springs had become a popular retirement community.
Geography
Citrus Springs is located at 28°59'N 82°25'W (28.983, -82.417). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.17%) is water.
Economy
Citrus Springs is a residential community with no major industries. The economy is largely based on the service industry, with many residents employed in retail, hospitality, and healthcare. The area is also home to several small businesses, including a golf course, a winery, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 8,822 people, 3,845 households, and 2,717 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,072.2 people per square mile (414.7/km2). There were 4,541 housing units at an average density of 554.2/sq mi (214.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.45% White, 0.45% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.45% of the population.
There were 3,845 households, out of which 17.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was 2.60.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 16.2% under the age of 18, 4.2% from 18 to 24, 17.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 37.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 56 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $41,944. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $22,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $20,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
