Citrus Park Summary

Citrus Park is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 20,976 at the 2010 census.

History

Citrus Park was originally part of a large citrus grove owned by the prominent McKay family. The area was known as McKay’s Grove until the 1950s when it was developed into a residential community. The area was annexed into the City of Tampa in 1957 and was known as Citrus Park until it was unincorporated in 1975.

Geography

Citrus Park is located at 28°4′17″N 82°33′17″W (28.071445, -82.554720). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.17%) is water.

Economy

Citrus Park is home to several large employers, including the University of South Florida, Tampa General Hospital, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The area is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 20,976 people, 8,845 households, and 5,845 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,569.2 people per square mile (991.2/km2). There were 9,521 housing units at an average density of 1,174.2/sq mi (454.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 87.45% White, 5.45% African American, 0.25% Native American, 2.45% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 2.45% from other races, and 2.35% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.45% of the population.
There were 8,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.83.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 21.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,845, and the median income for a family was $51,945. Males had a median income of $36,945 versus $27,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $22,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
