Walton County Summary

Walton County is located in the northwest corner of Florida, along the Gulf of Mexico. It is bordered by Okaloosa County to the east, Holmes County to the north, Washington County to the west, and Bay County to the south. The county seat is DeFuniak Springs, and the largest city is Santa Rosa Beach. The county has a total area of 1,240 square miles, of which 1,077 square miles is land and 163 square miles is water.
Walton County was created in 1824 and named for George Walton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The county was originally part of Escambia County, but was split off in 1843. The county was largely rural until the late 20th century, when it began to experience rapid growth due to its proximity to the Gulf of Mexico and its attractive beaches.
