Manatee County Summary

Manatee County is located in the U.S. state of Florida and is part of the Tampa Bay Area. It is bordered by Sarasota County to the south, DeSoto County to the east, and Hillsborough County to the north. The county seat is Bradenton, and the largest city is Bradenton. The county has a total area of 893 square miles, of which 827 square miles is land and 66 square miles is water.

History

Manatee County was established in 1855 and was named for the Florida manatee, which is native to the area. The county was originally part of Hillsborough County, but was split off in 1855. The county was originally home to the Seminole and Miccosukee tribes, who were relocated to the area in the early 19th century.
The county was largely rural until the 1950s, when the population began to grow rapidly due to the influx of retirees and other migrants from the northern United States. The county's population has continued to grow since then, and is now home to over 400,000 people.

Geography

Manatee County is located in the Tampa Bay Area of Florida, and is bordered by Sarasota County to the south, DeSoto County to the east, and Hillsborough County to the north. The county has a total area of 893 square miles, of which 827 square miles is land and 66 square miles is water.
The county is home to several rivers, including the Manatee River, which flows through the county and empties into the Gulf of Mexico. The county also contains several lakes, including Lake Manatee, Lakewood Ranch, and Lake Uihlein.

Other major employers include Publix Super Markets, Bealls Department Stores, and Manatee Memorial Hospital.

The county is also home to several golf courses, including the River Wilderness Golf and Country Club and the Bradenton Country Club.

As of the 2010 census, Manatee County had a population of 322,833. The racial makeup of the county was 77.2% White, 11.3% African American, 0.5% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.7% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 17.2% of the population.
The median income for a household in the county was $45,890, and the median income for a family was $54,817. The per capita income for the county was $25,845. About 11.2% of families and 15.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
