Glades County Summary

Glades County is a county located in the state of Florida in the United States. It is part of the Southwest Florida region and is bordered by Hendry County to the north, Lee County to the east, and Highlands County to the south. The county seat is Moore Haven, and the largest city is LaBelle. As of the 2010 census, the population was 12,884.

History

Glades County was created in 1921 from parts of DeSoto and Lee counties. It was named for the Florida Everglades, which cover much of the county. The county was originally inhabited by the Calusa Indians, who were later displaced by the Seminole Indians. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 19th century, and the county was officially established in 1921.

Geography

Glades County is located in the southwestern corner of Florida, and is bordered by Hendry County to the north, Lee County to the east, and Highlands County to the south. The county covers an area of 1,068 square miles, of which 1,039 square miles is land and 29 square miles is water. The county is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the northern part. The highest point in the county is the summit of Sugarloaf Mountain, which rises to an elevation of 98 feet.
The county is home to several rivers, including the Caloosahatchee River, which forms the western boundary of the county, and the Fisheating Creek, which flows through the center of the county. The county also contains several lakes, including Lake Okeechobee, which is the largest lake in the state.
