The area was originally known as “Boggy Creek” and was a farming community. In the 1950s, the area was developed as a residential community. The area was named Buenaventura Lakes in the 1960s.

Buenaventura Lakes is located at 28°17′N 81°20′W (28.28, -81.33). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), of which 5.1 square miles (13.2 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.90%) is water.
