Bloomingdale Summary

Bloomingdale is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 22,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St. Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Bloomingdale was first settled in the late 1800s by a group of settlers from the Midwest. The area was originally known as “Little Egypt” due to its location near the Hillsborough River. The name was changed to Bloomingdale in the early 1900s when the area was developed as a citrus farming community. The area was annexed by the City of Brandon in the 1950s and is now part of the unincorporated area of Hillsborough County.

Geography

Bloomingdale is located at 27°54'45" North, 82°17'45" West (27.912500, -82.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.17%) is water.

Economy

Bloomingdale is primarily a residential community, with most of its residents commuting to nearby Tampa for work. The area is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services. The area is also home to several large employers, including the University of South Florida, Tampa General Hospital, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 22,711 people, 8,845 households, and 6,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,743.3 people per square mile (1,061.2/km2). There were 9,521 housing units at an average density of 1,154.7/sq mi (447.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 87.2% White, 6.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.9% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.7% of the population.
There were 8,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 24.3% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $50,845, and the median income for a family was $56,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $27,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $22,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.7% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
