Union Summary

Union is a town in Union Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,906 at the 2010 census. It is the parish seat of Union Parish.

History

Union was founded in 1839 and named for the union of the two parishes of Union and Ouachita. The town was incorporated in 1845. Union was the site of the first courthouse in Union Parish, which was built in 1839. The courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1864 during the Civil War. The current courthouse was built in 1872.

Economy

The economy of Union is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including cotton, soybean, and corn farms. The town also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,906 people, 745 households, and 517 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,567.2 people per square mile (604.7/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 668.2 per square mile (257.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 68.90% White, 29.90% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.68% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $31,250. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $19,375 for females. The per capita income for the town was $13,945.
