Thibodaux Summary

Thibodaux is a city located in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is the parish seat and the largest city in the parish. The population was 14,567 at the 2010 census. Thibodaux is a principal city of the Houma–Bayou Cane–Thibodaux Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area around Thibodaux was first settled by French-speaking Acadians in the early 18th century. The name Thibodaux is a French version of the name of a local Native American tribe, the Atakapa. The city was named after a local chief, Thibodeaux, who lived in the area in the early 19th century.
The area was part of the French colony of Louisiana until 1803, when it was sold to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase. The area was developed for sugar cane plantations, and the city was founded in 1809.

Geography

Thibodaux is located at 29°45′N 90°48′W (29.75, -90.8). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.17%) is water.

Economy

Thibodaux is the economic center of Lafourche Parish. The city is home to several large employers, including Nicholls State University, Thibodaux Regional Medical Center, and the Thibodaux-based Rouses Supermarket chain. The city is also home to several large industrial plants, including the Shell Oil refinery and the Valero Energy Corporation refinery.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 14,567 people, 5,099 households, and 3,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,811.2 people per square mile (699.7/km2). There were 5,541 housing units at an average density of 690.2 per square mile (266.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 57.45% White, 40.45% African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.51% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.38% of the population.
There were 5,099 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 19.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.22.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.7% under the age of 18, 14.7% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 88.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,845, and the median income for a family was $35,945. Males had a median income of $30,945 versus $20,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,945. About 19.2% of families and 22.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.7% of those under age 18 and 16.7% of those age 65 or over.
