Schriever is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana. It is situated about 15 miles southwest of Houma, the parish seat. The population of Schriever was 8,945 at the 2010 census.

History

Schriever was founded in 1883 by a group of German immigrants led by Joseph Schriever. The town was named after Schriever, who was a successful businessman and landowner in the area. The town was originally a farming community, but it has since grown to include a variety of businesses and industries.

Geography

Schriever is located at 29°37'25"N 90°45'45"W (29.623607, -90.762490). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square mile (0.2 km2) (1.17%) is water.

Economy

Schriever is home to a variety of businesses and industries. The town is home to several oil and gas companies, as well as a number of manufacturing and service businesses. The town is also home to a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 8,945 people, 3,093 households, and 2,323 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,087.7 people per square mile (419.9/km2). There were 3,309 housing units at an average density of 403.3 per square mile (155.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.2% White, 16.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 3,093 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size was 3.22.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $43,917. Males had a median income of $35,917 versus $21,917 for females.
