River Ridge Summary

River Ridge is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is a suburb of New Orleans and is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Kenner Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 11,494 at the 2010 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km2) (0.48%) is water.

History

The area now known as River Ridge was originally part of the plantation of Jacques T. Freret, who purchased the land in 1810. The area was known as Freret's Ridge until the early 1900s, when it was renamed River Ridge.
The area was largely rural until the 1950s, when it began to be developed as a residential suburb of New Orleans. The population of River Ridge increased rapidly in the 1960s and 1970s, and the area is now a densely populated residential community.

Economy

River Ridge is a primarily residential community, with most of its residents commuting to jobs in New Orleans and other nearby cities. The area is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 11,494 people, 4,541 households, and 3,092 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,741.3 people per square mile (1,058.2/km2). There were 4,741 housing units at an average density of 1,130.2 per square mile (435.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 87.90% White, 8.45% African American, 0.20% Native American, 1.45% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.90% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.90% of the population.
There were 4,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $51,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $27,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $20,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.7% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
