Palmetto is a small town located in the state of Louisiana, United States. It is situated in the parish of St. Landry, and is part of the Opelousas-Eunice Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has a population of 1,845 as of the 2010 census.
History
Palmetto was founded in 1845 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Opelousas. The town was named after the palmetto trees that grew in the area. The town was originally a farming community, and the main crops grown were cotton, corn, and sugar cane.
In the late 19th century, the town began to grow and develop. The first school was built in 1887, and the first post office was established in 1891. The town was incorporated in 1895.
In the early 20th century, the town experienced a period of growth and development. The first bank was established in 1906, and the first telephone service was established in 1910. The town also had a railroad station, which was built in 1912.
Geography
Palmetto is located in the southeastern part of the state of Louisiana, in the parish of St. Landry. It is situated at an elevation of 33 feet (10 m) above sea level. The town is located at the intersection of U.S. Route 190 and Louisiana Highway 29.
