Inniswold is a census-designated place (CDP) located in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. It is situated in the southeastern part of the parish, approximately 10 miles from the city of Baton Rouge. The population of Inniswold was 4,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Inniswold was founded in the early 1900s by a group of settlers from Scotland. The name of the town is derived from the Gaelic phrase “Innis Wold”, which translates to “Island of the Woods”. The settlers chose this name because of the abundance of trees in the area.
Inniswold was originally a small farming community, but it began to grow in the 1950s when the nearby city of Baton Rouge began to expand. The population of Inniswold increased rapidly during this time, and the town was eventually incorporated in 1965.

Geography

Inniswold is located at 30°25'25" North, 91°7'25" West (30.423750, -91.123611). It has an elevation of 33 feet (10 m).
The CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of which is land. It is bordered by the city of Baton Rouge to the north, the city of Central to the east, and the city of Baker to the south.

Economy

Inniswold’s economy is largely based on the service industry. The town is home to several restaurants, retail stores, and other businesses. The town also has a few manufacturing plants, including a paper mill and a plastics factory.
Inniswold is also home to a number of small businesses, including a number of auto repair shops, a grocery store, and a few small restaurants.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 4,845 people, 1,845 households, and 1,323 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,159.2 people per square mile (448.2/km2). There were 1,945 housing units at an average density of 463.3 per square mile (179.1/km2).
The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.2% White, 17.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 24.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.2% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
