History

Donaldsonville was founded in 1806 by William Donaldson, a wealthy planter from Maryland. He purchased the land from the Houmas Indians and named the town after himself. The town was incorporated in 1817 and quickly became a thriving port city. It was the first capital of the Louisiana Territory and served as the state capital from 1829 to 1831.
During the Civil War, Donaldsonville was the site of several battles, including the Battle of Donaldsonville in 1862. The city was occupied by Union forces for the duration of the war. After the war, the city experienced a period of economic decline, but was revitalized in the late 19th century with the construction of the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad.
