Clinton Summary

Clinton, Louisiana is a small town located in East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. It is situated about 25 miles north of Baton Rouge and is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has a population of about 2,000 people and is known for its historic downtown area and its proximity to the Mississippi River.

History

The area that is now Clinton was first settled in the early 1800s by French and Spanish settlers. The town was originally known as “Laurel Hill” and was later renamed “Clinton” in honor of DeWitt Clinton, the former governor of New York. The town was officially incorporated in 1845 and was the first town in East Feliciana Parish.
In the late 1800s, Clinton became a major railroad hub and was home to several cotton mills. The town was also home to a number of other businesses, including a brickyard, a sawmill, and a gristmill.
