Amite City Summary

Amite City, Louisiana is a small city located in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana. It is located about 50 miles north of New Orleans and is part of the Hammond Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city has a population of approximately 4,000 people and is the parish seat of Tangipahoa Parish.

History

The area that is now Amite City was first settled in the early 1800s by French and Spanish settlers. The city was officially incorporated in 1855 and was named after the Amite River, which runs through the city. The city was an important trading center for the area and was home to several plantations. During the Civil War, the city was occupied by Union forces and was the site of several skirmishes.
After the war, the city experienced a period of growth and development. The railroad was extended to the city in 1872, and the city became a major shipping center for the area. The city also became a center for the lumber industry, and several sawmills were built in the area.
