Whetstone Summary

Whetstone, Arizona is a small town located in Cochise County in the southeastern corner of the state. It is situated in the San Pedro Valley, approximately 25 miles north of the Mexican border. The town is located on the banks of the San Pedro River, which is a major tributary of the Gila River. The town is surrounded by rolling hills and mountains, and is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, javelina, and coyotes.

History

The area around Whetstone was first inhabited by the Chiricahua Apache Indians, who lived in the area for centuries before the arrival of Europeans. The first Europeans to settle in the area were Spanish missionaries, who established a mission in the area in the late 1700s. The mission was abandoned in the early 1800s, and the area was largely uninhabited until the late 1800s, when settlers began to move into the area.
