Upper Santan Village Summary

History

Upper Santan Village was established in the late 19th century by the Pima and Maricopa tribes. The village was originally located on the banks of the Gila River, but was relocated to its current location in the early 20th century. The relocation was due to the construction of the Coolidge Dam, which flooded the original village site.

The village was originally known as "Santan" and was later renamed "Upper Santan" to distinguish it from the nearby community of Lower Santan. The name "Santan" is derived from the Pima word for "place of the sun".

Geography

Upper Santan Village is located at 33°25'17"N 112°14'17"W. It is situated on the Gila River Indian Reservation, which is located in the Sonoran Desert. The village is located approximately 25 miles southeast of Phoenix and is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area.

The village is located in a rural area and is surrounded by agricultural land. The nearest major city is Phoenix, which is located approximately 25 miles to the northwest.

Economy

The economy of Upper Santan Village is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms and ranches, which produce a variety of crops, including cotton, alfalfa, and hay. The village also has a small manufacturing sector, which produces a variety of products, including furniture and clothing.
