Geography

Somerton is located at 32°38′N 114°41′W (32.633, -114.683). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all land.

History

Somerton was founded in 1909 by the Arizona and California Railroad. The town was named after the nearby Somerton Mountains. The town was incorporated in 1918.

Economy

Somerton is a major agricultural center in the Yuma Valley. The city is home to a variety of agricultural businesses, including vegetable farms, cotton gins, and packing houses. The city is also home to a number of manufacturing and service businesses.

As of the census of 2000, there were 11,922 people, 3,845 households, and 3,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,288.3 people per square mile (883.3/km2). There were 4,093 housing units at an average density of 790.2 per square mile (305.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 0.7% African American, 1.2% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 26.3% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 64.2% of the population.
There were 3,845 households, out of which 44.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.2% were non-families. 16.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.09 and the average family size was 3.48.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 33.2% under the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.7 males.
