Mountainburg Summary

Mountainburg is a city in Crawford County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,068 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Smith, Arkansas-Oklahoma Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Mountainburg was founded in 1876 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Van Buren. The town was named for the nearby mountain range, and the first post office was established in 1877. The town was incorporated in 1881.
Mountainburg was a small farming community until the early 20th century, when the railroad arrived and the town began to grow. The town was home to a number of businesses, including a sawmill, a gristmill, a cotton gin, and a general store.
In the 1920s, the town was home to a number of tourist attractions, including a dance hall, a swimming pool, and a movie theater. The town also had a number of churches, including the First Baptist Church, which was founded in 1881.

Mountainburg is located in western Crawford County at 35°25′25″N 94°17′17″W (35.423750, -94.288100). It is bordered to the north by the city of Van Buren, to the east by the city of Alma, and to the south by the city of Mulberry.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

Mountainburg is a small, rural community with a population of 1,068 as of the 2010 census. The town is home to a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a number of restaurants.
The town is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a furniture manufacturer, a plastics manufacturer, and a metal fabrication company.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,068 people, 431 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 483.2 people per square mile (186.7/km2). There were 476 housing units at an average density of 214.7 per square mile (82.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 431 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.94.
