Gateway was founded in the late 1800s by settlers from the Ozark region of Missouri. The town was originally known as “Gateway to the Ozarks” due to its location at the entrance to the Ozark Mountains. The town was officially incorporated in 1891.
In the early 1900s, Gateway was a thriving community with a population of over 500 people. The town was home to several businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a sawmill, and a gristmill. The town also had a post office, a school, and a church.
In the 1920s, the population of Gateway began to decline as people moved away in search of better economic opportunities. By the 1950s, the population had dropped to just over 200 people.
