Barling Summary

Barling, Arkansas is a small city located in Sebastian County, Arkansas. It is situated on the Arkansas River, just south of Fort Smith. The city has a population of approximately 4,000 people and is part of the Fort Smith metropolitan area.

History

Barling was founded in 1887 by the Barling family, who had moved to the area from Tennessee. The city was named after the family’s patriarch, William Barling. The city was incorporated in 1891 and was initially a farming community. In the early 1900s, the city began to grow as a result of the timber industry. The city was also home to a number of sawmills and lumber companies.
In the 1920s, the city began to experience a period of growth and development. The city was home to a number of businesses, including a cotton gin, a flour mill, a brick factory, and a canning factory. The city also had a number of churches, schools, and other civic organizations.
In the 1950s, the city began to experience a decline in population as people moved away from the area. The city’s economy was also affected by the decline in the timber industry. In the 1970s, the city began to experience a resurgence in population and economic activity. The city was home to a number of new businesses, including a shopping center, a movie theater, and a bowling alley.

Geography

Barling is located in the Arkansas River Valley, just south of Fort Smith. The city is situated on the banks of the Arkansas River and is surrounded by rolling hills and wooded areas. The city has a total area of 4.2 square miles, all of which is land.
