Wilton Summary

Wilton is a small town located in the southwestern corner of Arkansas, in the Ouachita Mountains. It is situated in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains, and is surrounded by the Ouachita National Forest. The town is located in the Ouachita County, and is part of the Hot Springs Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Wilton was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Wilton was founded in 1883 by the Wilton Land and Improvement Company. The company was formed by a group of investors from Little Rock, Arkansas, who purchased the land from the Choctaw Nation. The town was named after Wilton, Connecticut, the hometown of one of the investors. The town was incorporated in 1887.
The town was originally a logging and farming community, and the first post office was established in 1884. The town was also home to a sawmill, a gristmill, and a cotton gin. The town was also home to a number of stores, including a general store, a drug store, and a hardware store.

Geography

Wilton is located at 34°41'25" North, 93°25'45" West (34.690278, -93.429167). The town is situated in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains, and is surrounded by the Ouachita National Forest. The town is located in the Ouachita County, and is part of the Hot Springs Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The town has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all of which is land. The town is located near the Ouachita River, and is approximately 20 miles south of Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Economy

The economy of Wilton is largely based on agriculture and forestry. The town is home to a number of farms, and the surrounding area is home to a number of timber companies. The town is also home to a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the town. The population density was 908.3 people per square mile. There were 486 housing units at an average density of 405.8 per square mile. The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $27,500, and the median income for a family was $32,500. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,845.
