Washington Summary

Washington is a city located in Hempstead County, Arkansas, United States. It is the county seat of Hempstead County and the largest city in the county. The population was 1,817 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Washington is located at 33°37'45" North, 93°37'45" West (33.629167, -93.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all land.

History

Washington was founded in 1824 and named after George Washington. It was the first county seat of Hempstead County. The city was incorporated in 1836.
The city was the site of the Battle of Washington, a skirmish of the American Civil War, on April 15, 1864.

Economy

The economy of Washington is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several large farms and ranches, as well as a number of small businesses. The city is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a paper mill and a furniture factory.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,817 people, 745 households, and 463 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,400.7 people per square mile (541.3/km2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 645.4 per square mile (249.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 73.2% White, 22.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $32,813. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $19,375 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,845. About 17.2% of families and 20.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
