Lonoke is a city located in Lonoke County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 4,245 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lonoke County. The city is located in the Arkansas Delta region and is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Conway Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Lonoke was founded in 1873 by the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway. The city was named after the Lonoke River, which was named after the Choctaw word for "deer". The city was incorporated in 1876.
Geography
Lonoke is located at 34°47'25" North, 91°53'17" West (34.790278, -91.888333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.
Economy
Lonoke is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to a number of agricultural businesses, including poultry and cattle farms.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 4,245 people, 1,619 households, and 1,097 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,006.2 people per square mile (388.7/km2). There were 1,817 housing units at an average density of 433.2 per square mile (167.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.45% White, 28.90% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.86% from other races, and 1.39% from two or more races. 2.17% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,619 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 19.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,917, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females.
