The area that is now Lakeview was first settled in the early 1800s by settlers from Tennessee and Kentucky. The town was originally known as "Baxter Springs" and was established in 1873. The town was renamed "Lakeview" in 1876, when the post office was established.
The town was incorporated in 1881 and was the first town in Baxter County to be incorporated. The town was named for its view of the nearby Bull Shoals Lake.

Lakeview is located in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains in northern Arkansas. It is situated in the White River Valley, and is bordered by the White River to the east and the Buffalo River to the west. The town is located at an elevation of 845 feet (258 m).
