History
Gosnell was founded in the early 1900s by the Gosnell family, who owned a large amount of land in the area. The town was named after the family and was incorporated in 1949.
Geography
Gosnell is located at 35°51'25" North, 89°59'45" West (35.856944, -89.995833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.
Economy
Gosnell's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large poultry processing plants, as well as a number of smaller businesses. The city also has a small retail sector, with several small stores and restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,744 people, 1,072 households, and 745 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,241.2 people per square mile (478.3/km2). There were 1,179 housing units at an average density of 531.2 per square mile (204.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.17% White, 18.45% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. 1.45% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,072 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
