Georgetown Summary

Georgetown is a small town located in White County, Arkansas, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Little Red River, approximately 20 miles northeast of Searcy. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Georgetown is located at 35°25'25" North, 91°45'45" West (35.423, -91.7625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all land.

History

Georgetown was founded in 1872 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Searcy. The town was named after George W. Smith, a prominent local businessman. The town was incorporated in 1883.
In the early 1900s, Georgetown was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several cotton gins, a grist mill, and a sawmill. The town also had a hotel, a bank, and several stores.
In the 1950s, the town began to decline as the local economy shifted away from agriculture. The town's population decreased from a peak of 1,000 in the 1940s to just over 500 in the 2000s.

Economy

Georgetown's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including a large dairy farm. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 215 households, and 145 families residing in the town. The population density was 776.4 people per square mile (299.9/km2). There were 233 housing units at an average density of 331.4 per square mile (127.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
There were 215 households, out of which 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.5% were non-families. 29.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $27,500, and the median income for a family was $31,875. Males had a median income of $25,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $13,945. About 14.3% of families and 17.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 15.2% of those age 65 or over.
