Dierks is a town located in Howard County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Howard County.

History

Dierks was founded in 1891 and named after the Dierks Brothers Lumber Company, which had a large sawmill in the area. The town was incorporated in 1895.

Economy

The economy of Dierks is largely based on agriculture and timber. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a lumber yard.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 221 households, and 145 families residing in the town. The population density was 681.3 people per square mile (263.3/km2). There were 246 housing units at an average density of 307.5 per square mile (118.6/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
There were 221 households, out of which 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 9.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.9% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.3 males.
