Pasadena Summary

Pasadena is a census-designated place (CDP) in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States. The population was 24,287 at the 2010 census. It is located approximately 15 miles (24 km) northeast of Annapolis, the state capital.

Geography

Pasadena is located at 39°7′17″N 76°32′45″W (39.1214, -76.5457). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 10.2 square miles (26.4 km2), of which 9.9 square miles (25.6 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2) (2.90%) is water.

History

Pasadena was first settled in the early 19th century by farmers who grew tobacco and other crops. The area was known as Rock Creek Crossroads until the late 19th century, when it was renamed Pasadena after Pasadena, California. The area was incorporated as a town in 1911, but was later annexed by Anne Arundel County in 1951.

Economy

Pasadena is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The largest employers in the area are Anne Arundel Medical Center, Northrop Grumman, and the U.S. Naval Academy.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 24,287 people, 8,945 households, and 6,717 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,457.3 people per square mile (949.7/km2). There were 9,245 housing units at an average density of 937.2 per square mile (362.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 91.17% White, 4.45% African American, 0.20% Native American, 2.45% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 1.20% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.90% of the population.
There were 8,945 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.7% were non-families. 20.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.15.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.7 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $63,945, and the median income for a family was $71,945. Males had a median income of $48,945 versus $35,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $27,945. About 2.7% of families and 3.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
