Huntingtown Summary

Huntingtown is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Calvert County, Maryland, United States. The population was 8,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington metropolitan area.

History

The area that is now Huntingtown was first settled in the early 1700s by English and German immigrants. The town was originally known as “Huntingtown Crossroads” and was a small farming community. In the late 1800s, the town began to grow and develop as a result of the railroad and the Chesapeake Bay. The town was officially incorporated in 1891 and was named after the local hunting grounds.

Geography

Huntingtown is located at 38°37'45" North, 76°37'45" West (38.629167, -76.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Huntingtown’s economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several farms, including a dairy farm, a vegetable farm, and a horse farm. Huntingtown is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and a winery.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 8,845 people, 3,093 households, and 2,521 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,077.3 people per square mile (415.9/km2). There were 3,309 housing units at an average density of 403.3 per square mile (155.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 3,093 households, out of which 41.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.2% were non-families. 16.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.20.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 28.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $87,917, and the median income for a family was $94,917. Males had a median income of $60,000 versus $41,250 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $31,917. About 2.2% of families and 3.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.7% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
