Galena Summary

Galena is a small town located in Kent County, Maryland, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Chester River, about 25 miles east of Chestertown. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census.

History

Galena was first settled in the late 17th century by English settlers. The town was originally known as "Chester Town" and was the county seat of Kent County. In 1706, the town was renamed "Galena" after the lead ore found in the area. The town was incorporated in 1722 and was the first incorporated town in Kent County.
In the late 18th century, Galena was a major port for the export of tobacco and other goods. The town was also home to several shipbuilding yards and a number of warehouses. During the War of 1812, the town was the site of a major naval battle between the British and American forces.
In the 19th century, Galena became a popular summer resort for wealthy families from Baltimore and Washington, D.C. The town was also home to a number of prominent citizens, including Supreme Court Justice Roger B. Taney and U.S. Senator Reverdy Johnson.

Geography

Galena is located at 39°17′N 76°2′W (39.28, -76.03). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Galena is largely based on tourism and agriculture. The town is home to several wineries, a brewery, and a distillery. There are also several antique shops, art galleries, and restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,717 people, 717 households, and 463 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,902.2 people per square mile (735.2/km2). There were 790 housing units at an average density of 871.1 per square mile (337.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 92.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $45,000, and the median income for a family was $54,375. Males had a median income of $41,250 versus $30,000 for females.
