Essex Summary

Essex is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Baltimore County, Maryland, United States. The population was 37,842 at the 2010 census. It is located just east of the City of Baltimore, and is part of the Baltimore metropolitan area.

Geography

Essex is located at 39°19′N 76°22′W (39.3179, -76.3690). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.17%) is water.

History

Essex was first settled in the early 1700s by English settlers. The area was originally known as Back River Neck, and was part of Baltimore County. In 1854, the area was renamed Essex, after the town of Essex in England. The area was primarily rural until the 1950s, when suburban development began to take hold.

Economy

Essex is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The area is also home to a number of industrial and manufacturing businesses. The largest employer in Essex is the Social Security Administration, which has a regional office located in the area.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 37,842 people, 14,945 households, and 10,072 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 4,664.3 people per square mile (1,799.7/km2). There were 15,845 housing units at an average density of 1,955.3 per square mile (753.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.2% White, 14.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 14,945 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $59,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $32,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $24,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
