Aberdeen Summary

Aberdeen, Maryland is a city located in Harford County, Maryland, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Susquehanna River, about 30 miles northeast of Baltimore. The city has a population of 14,959 as of the 2010 census.

History

Aberdeen was first settled in 1706 by William and John Shaw, two brothers from Scotland. The town was originally known as Shaw’s Landing, and was later renamed Aberdeen after the city in Scotland. The town was officially incorporated in 1892.
In the early 19th century, Aberdeen was a major port for the Chesapeake Bay region. It was a major center for the oyster industry, and was also home to several shipbuilding companies. The town was also a major stop on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.
In the late 19th century, Aberdeen became a major center for the production of paper products. The city was home to several paper mills, including the Aberdeen Paper Mill, which was the largest paper mill in the United States at the time.

Geography

Aberdeen is located at 39°29′N 76°10′W (39.48, -76.17). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), of which 5.1 square miles (13.2 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
The city is located on the banks of the Susquehanna River, and is bordered by the towns of Havre de Grace to the north, Perryman to the east, and Bel Air to the south.

Economy

Aberdeen is home to several major employers, including the Aberdeen Proving Ground, a U.S. Army installation. The installation is the largest employer in the city, with over 20,000 employees.
The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including the Aberdeen Iron Works, which produces steel products, and the Aberdeen Paper Mill, which produces paper products.
The city is also home to several retail stores, including the Aberdeen Mall, which is the largest shopping center in the city.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 14,959 people, 5,945 households, and 3,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,945.3 people per square mile (1,137.2/km2). There were 6,541 housing units at an average density of 1,279.3 per square mile (493.3/km2).
The racial makeup of the city was 73.2% White, 19.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 5,945 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,844. Males had a median income of $41,890 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 6.7% of those age 65 or over.
