Woodmore Summary
Woodmore is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Prince George’s County, Maryland, United States. The population was 8,945 at the 2010 census. It is located near the intersection of Maryland Route 202 and Maryland Route 214.
History
Woodmore was first settled in the late 1700s by the Wood family, who owned a large tract of land in the area. The Wood family built a large house on the property, which still stands today. The area was known as Wood’s Corner until the early 1900s, when it was renamed Woodmore.
In the early 1900s, the area was mostly farmland, with a few small businesses. In the 1950s, the area began to develop as a residential community. The Woodmore Shopping Center was built in the 1960s, and the area has continued to grow since then.
Geography
Woodmore is located at 38°54′45″N 76°50′45″W (38.912500, -76.845556). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Woodmore is primarily a residential community, but it does have some commercial businesses. The Woodmore Shopping Center is the largest shopping center in the area, and it includes a grocery store, a pharmacy, a bank, and several restaurants. There are also several small businesses in the area, including auto repair shops, hair salons, and a pet store.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 8,945 people, 3,093 households, and 2,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,133.3 people per square mile (822.7/km2). There were 3,213 housing units at an average density of 764.3/sq mi (295.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 57.2% White, 36.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 3.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 3,093 households, out of which 41.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.2% were non-families. 15.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 4.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.90 and the average family size was 3.25.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $90,945, and the median income for a family was $97,945. Males had a median income of $60,945 versus $41,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $32,945. About 2.2% of families and 3.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.2% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
