Hillcrest Heights is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Prince George’s County, Maryland, United States. The population was 11,817 at the 2010 census. Hillcrest Heights is located in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

History

Hillcrest Heights was originally part of the larger Hillcrest community, which was developed in the early 1900s. The community was named after the hilltop location of the original development. The area was annexed by the City of Washington in the 1920s, and the Hillcrest Heights area was developed in the 1950s. The area was annexed by Prince George’s County in the 1960s.

Economy

The economy of Hillcrest Heights is largely based on retail and services. The area is home to several shopping centers, including the Hillcrest Heights Shopping Center, which is anchored by a Giant Food store. There are also several restaurants, banks, and other businesses in the area.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 11,817 people, 4,541 households, and 2,945 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 6,945.3 people per square mile (2,683.2/km2). There were 4,817 housing units at an average density of 2,817.3/sq mi (1,087.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 11.2% White, 79.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.2% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.7% of the population.
There were 4,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.2% were married couples living together, 25.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 88.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $35,938 versus $30,938 for females.
