Halfway Summary

Halfway is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Washington County, Maryland, United States. It is part of the Hagerstown Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 4,945 at the 2010 census.

History

Halfway was first settled in the late 1700s by German immigrants. The town was originally known as "Halfway Town" because it was located halfway between Hagerstown and Williamsport. The town was officially incorporated in 1892.

Geography

Halfway is located at 39°37′17″N 77°45′17″W (39.6213, -77.7548). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

Economy

Halfway is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, a bank, and several restaurants. The town is also home to a number of small manufacturing companies.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,945 people, 1,945 households, and 1,346 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,179.2 people per square mile (455.7/km2). There were 2,039 housing units at an average density of 489.2/sq mi (188.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 94.45% White, 2.90% African American, 0.20% Native American, 1.20% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.17% of the population.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $48,958. Males had a median income of $35,938 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $19,845. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
